Chapter Fourteen

Sweat poured from my body as I struggled to fall back asleep. My earlier attempts had me drifting off only to shoot up straight in bed as another nightmare plagued my rest.

My raven wanted out—and now.

I pulled on some loose shorts and a plain white T-shirt. There was no one out this early. If I hurried, I could shift and give my raven a chance to flap her wings and be free or as free as we could get.

With my arms folded over my chest, I sprinted to the clearing. I hid behind pillars and in dark alcoves when a stray teacher or staff member passed. They would be wondering if I was out to cause trouble.

I had enough to deal with.

Once I knew I was in the clear, I shifted right there. My skin tore more than usual. I felt the feathers form one by one. My mouth evolved into a beak, and my feet became legs with claws at the ends.

I stretched my legs and unfolded my wings, loving the first rays of the sun beating down on me.

Each feather seemed to come to life under the caress of the warmth. I craned my neck this way and that, giving her a fill of what shifting meant to us. We couldn’t fly or soar above mountains and trees, but we could do this.

A gasp from behind me had my raven frozen in place. I immediately shifted back to human and turned at the same time.

I’d been caught.

As I turned, I realized we were making this a habit. “Nixon, what are you doing here?”

“I could ask you the same thing but I already know the answer. Gwen, your raven.”

Gods, not this conversation again. And especially not with him. Not him. “I know. Don’t you dare feel sorry for me. I don’t want to see even a glimpse of pity. Not from you.”

I hadn’t meant to speak that last statement, no matter how true it was.

“Gwen, sweetheart, your raven is beyond beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like her.”

I froze in place as he moved toward me, taking off his jacket in the process. Having him come toward me like that, removing clothing, even something as innocent as a jacket, made me feel like I was right in the middle of one of those perfume commercials with gratuitous and non-related nakedness. What did a dude diving into the ocean naked have to do with their cologne?

Still, my breath caught in my throat. Was he going to kiss me? Maybe more? Morning sex right here on the grass under the rising sun? Hell yeah…

My fantasies were brought to a screeching halt when he took his jacket and wrapped it around my shoulders, pulling it closed in front of me. “She’s broken,” I said as a tear fell from my face. I was humiliated. In front of him.

“She’s not. She’s tall and lean. Her feathers, the way the colors dance under the rays of the sun…you, your raven, you’re beautiful, Gwen. All of you.
